In urban areas of Bangladesh considered as vulnerable to natural and manmade disasters for unplanned and uncontrolled growth, women must be enabled to take on a bigger role in disaster preparedness and response. But it is a constant challenge to achieve genuine female participation in disaster preparedness, planning and response. Due to socio-economic and cultural factors, disaster response is still male-dominated. However, progress is being made as government and NGOs began placing stronger emphasis on gender in relation to disaster. Rokeya Hossain (22), an undergraduate student started her volunteer journey through Proyash-II project in 2018. As an Urban Community Volunteer, she received training on search and rescue, fire-fighting and first aid from the Fire Service and Civil Defense. Rokeya’s family reacted positively to her volunteer activities.
